Why We Need To Go Green Now
Did you know that since the dawn of the industrial age, about two hundred years ago, the concentration of carbon dioxide in the air has gone up several times? Scientists have managed to determine a record of how the level of atmospheric carbon dioxide has varied over the ages, and they claim that the air now has more of this gas in it than it has ever had for the last eight hundred million years.
At that early period in the Earth’s history, it also seems that many forms of life suddenly became extinct.
This is an alarming sign. Evidently, this sudden increase in the carbon dioxide level is correlated with the tremendous consumption of fossil fuels - oil and coal - in our modern world.
We are by now familiar with terms like “global warming” and “greenhouse effect”. The global climate is predicted to become much hotter if this trend continues, with devastating effects.
To stop this trend, we all need to stop relying on fossil energy. We must switch to renewable sources of energy - such energy that keeps flowing all around us.
Before the industrial age, that is what people did. The problem was that they lacked any sophisticated means of using such sources. They could do simple things like heating their homes with wood (from trees that had grown using solar power) - and they could navigate the seas using wind power.
However, they did not have things like photovoltaic cells or home wind generators.
Today, modern technology has advanced to the point where we can harness solar energy directly. We can put residential solar panels on our rooftops, and we can put up home wind generators in suitable places.
Indeed, there is hope for the future - if we adapt the green technology of the future right now. The good news is that solar panels are now getting so cheap that they will pay for themselves in a fairly short time. And then you get free energy straight from the sun!
