Do You Still Need a SAN? No comments yet

SANs (storage area networks) have failed to work as advertised and could be replaced by application-centric direct-attached systems, according to a recent report from Forrester Research.

The report, Do you really need a SAN anymore?, written by Forrester senior analyst Andrew Reichman, questions whether SANs will be the dominant storage model in the future. Reichman maintains that SANs haven’t accomplished what they were designed to do: improve performance while lowering cost and complexity of managing applications and databases.

“It’s been the conventional wisdom of the past 10 years that to provide the best performance, protection and capacity utilisation for applications and databases, you need a robust storage array in a storage area network,” Reichman wrote. “But with low capacity utilisation, the inability to prioritise application performance, long provisioning times and soaring costs, SANs haven’t lived up to their promise.”

Reichman wrote that with application vendors putting more storage functionality into their applications, “the time has come for buyers to question the value of their SAN and consider simpler options that fit better with the applications they truly care about.”

The report said the purpose of SANs was to reduce cost, complexity, SAN islands and incompatibility, yet “instead of a consistent, shared pool of resources for all applications, storage in many shops is a thorny, complicated and costly mess.” Reichmann pointed out some of the problems of SANs: utilisation rates commonly in the 20% to 40% range, application islands caused by a fear of putting all applications on one SAN, incompatibility between different vendors’ storage and lack of good tiering schemes because block storage systems know little about the information stored on them.

The report claimed that the storage system of tomorrow will be application-centered, clustered and direct attached instead of networked. Instead of centralised storage, they will concentrate on a specific application and be managed by business applications, such as Microsoft Exchange or an infrastructure application like a database or hypervisor.

Reichmann predicted these systems will have utilisation rates in the 60% to 80% range and will be easier to manage and cost less than SANs. The report claimed that this type of approach has already begun, pointing to the Oracle/Hewlett-Packard Exadata system, Microsoft’s recommendation of DAS for Exchange 2007 and VMware’s increased storage management capability.

The report stated that application-centric storage systems may not be right for everybody, but “the possibility of bypassing SAN architectures for a fundamentally cheaper and simpler alternative is in the offing.”

The Forrester report doesn’t go deeply into network-attached storage (NAS), except to predict that file storage will remain the domain of storage vendors. Reichman told SearchStorage.com that he sees NAS systems separate from those that run applications in large shops with file and block storage in one system for smaller organisations.

“In larger environments I’d picture a silo for departmental file storage and/or special purpose apps that create files,” he wrote in an email to SearchStorage. “So, picture 50-plus terabyte silos of file storage that would be separate from silos for Oracle or Microsoft or VMWare apps.

“For smaller shops, below 50 TB or so total data footprint, I would picture them wanting a single box that does application storage and NAS in the same system. For them, DAS is less appealing, as they want to be able to pool the storage and replicate it, and aren’t likely to want many separate silos across their data.”

To Shop

These are difficult times economically and many people are making hasty choices. I avoid crowds because I am a short person and do not like to see only one beer belly ahead of me.The guy at Walmart was NOT short Nor Small. This happens more often than we think.

More and more people are making safer consumer choices by shopping from home. For myself, I shop online a lot more. And I go to familiar places like this birding guides store. I trust them. Besides what is most important for me today is a feeling of trust and safety. This birding guides place helps me feel that way and I shall do my Christmas shopping there.

To Learn

I love libraries. And now that I cannot get out and around as much as I used to, I spend a lot of time on the internet doing readings and research. Right now I am researching home based businesses and thinking about starting one. So my attention has turned to seeking good quality home based business review sites and I am really glad to find at least one I feel I can trust.

To Explore

My hobby of outdoor exploring has taken me to many extraordinary places. When I cannot get outdoors to explore, I rely on reading about other adventures in books and online.

I often seek times to take my bird book and favorite bird binoculars and take a short walk to explore. Simple everyday people were responsble for many observations about birds and wildlife which helped scientists learn about the state of the environment. when Rachel Carson learned song birds were diminishing due to DDT damage.Silent Spring was a catalyst for major environmental movements in America in the 1970’s.

What Does Your Handbag Say About You? No comments yet

When you think about your current handbag are you enchanted by its elegance and beauty.  Does it make a statement about you?  More to the point, does it make the right statement?

Now that’s a pretty sad question to ask but unfortunatley when we meet people for the fist time or attend a job interview they make immediate judgments about whether we are a potentail friend or employee.  Not nice maybe but it is a fact.  Whether we like it or not, and no matter how much we deny it, we are all programmed to make judgements and it takes a lot of resistance to overcome what is a largely natural instinct.

What has all this got to do with handbags you might be asking.  At least, I hope that’s what your asking in any event.  Well if we’re walking around with an old tatty handbag or, fail to match our handbag to our outfit, like it or not, we stand out; and not in a good way.

You can be a great power dresser but fail to match that style with the right accessories and you’re in trouble without ever realizing it.  Think about why Mel Gibsons film “What Women Want” was so funny?

Now owning the latest designer bags and accessories is not inexpensive but with a bit of careful investigation it’s quite possible to pick up quality items at more sensible prices.

Coach for example provide high quality bags at more affordable prices and it is quite possible to pick up discount coach bags with a 50% markdown compared to full retail. DKNY handbags are another great bag that you can save big on if you buy online and for the youner or young at heart Juicy Couture Bags make a great statement.

So, next time your handbag needs an update remember, it doesn’t have to cost a fortune and the right accessory will help make the right impression.

Take a Paid Survey at Home and Prosper! No comments yet

Uncertain economic times like those we are living in now mean that the market researchers are working overtime. Large companies employ market researchers to measure public opinion. They need to know what consumers are thinking, what they like and don’t like, which way the winds of change are blowing. This makes it easier than ever to get paid for surveys, to make money online taking online survey for cash. And you can do it all with a paid survey at home.

This is a good time to get paid for surveys online because the demand is up and the number of surveys is increasing every day.

The great thing about a paid survey at home is that you can take paid surveys without going out, without having to buy gasoline or put on suitable clothes for a paid workplace. And you choose your own hours! You can take a paid survey at home anytime, days, nights or weekends!! And you don’t even have to get out of your pajamas to make money with paid surveys!

Now I know that right now you are asing yourself, “Just how much can I make by taking online surveys for cash?” The answer is that it really depends on how hard you work at it and on your demographics. But, having said that, most survey takers report incomes of two to six hundred dollars a month, with many reporting incomes of a thousand dollars or more (sometimes a lot more)!

Are Aromatherapy Candles And Scented Potpourri Safe? No comments yet

Do you love the scent of aromatherapy candles and potpourri, but worry about the artificial fragrances and toxic ingredients that go into them?

There is plenty of reason for concern…

While the sweet scents and mood enhancing ability of aromatherapy candles may be charming and alluring, their by-products are lethal. Most aromatherapy candles contain chemical fragrances. When burned, they are converted into toxins such as acetone (an ingredient in nail polish remover and paint thinner), benezene, toluene, particulate matter and soot. Not only do the soot and chemicals get all over your home, but they get into your nose and lungs where they can do serious harm.

Even burning pure essential oils drastically alters their delicate constituents into potentially harmful substances.

Paraffin candles are as dangerous to the lungs as second-hand smoke. The more you candles you burn, the more the harmful effect is multiplied. That’s because when burned, paraffin releases benzene and toluene - known carcinogens. These toxic substances are inhaled into you and your family’s lungs and leave residue on walls, ceilings and fabrics. It’s may be hard to believe the soot from paraffin candles contains many of the same toxins found in diesel fuel, but it’s true.

Candles from China, South America and other developing countries often contain lead in the wicks. These countries lack the resources to monitor the safety of products. Burning a few leaded wicks for only a few hours will increase lead levels 9 to 11 times over acceptable limits. Just burning 4 metal-wick candles for two hours can result in enough airborne lead concentrations to pose a threat to human health. Some homes where leaded wick candles are burned frequently become so toxic, they cannot be sold.

Slow-burning candles often contain harmful additives. Gel candles contain petroleum with butylated hydroxyl toluene, not exactly healthy substances. Plus, they have a tendency to explode when overheaded.

“Candles are fast becoming one of the most common unrecognized causes of poor indoor air quality,” says Diane Walsh Astry, Executive Director of the Health House Project, an American Lung Association education project in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Soy candles are less toxic, if you don’t mind burning genetically modified plant matter. Frankly, I don’t want to support the GMO industry in any way, shape or form, nor do I want any GMO residue floating around my air space.

The bottom line is, burning any kind of aromatherapy candle or scented candle is essentially poisoning yourself and your family.

What can you do? How can you enjoy the fragrances of the season without releasing toxic and sometimes lethal substances into the air?

First, if you must burn a candle, make sure it’s beeswax. Beeswax candles are considerably safer than paraffin and metal-wicked. But they are expensive, and not as readily available.

Secondly, try diffusing essential oils instead. Rather than burning essential oils, diffusers work like atomizers, breaking up molecules into a microscopic mist and sending them out into the room. When you diffuse with therapeutic-grade essential oils, you are actually benefiting your body and lungs. Diffusing is a safe, easy and healthy way to infuse your favorite fragrance into your home.

The Ultrasonic Diffuser is a brand-new, state-of-the-art system that can diffuse even the thickest of oils.

Our olefactory sense is an important part of life and should be enjoyed. Harmful and toxic fragrances can be easily avoided. There’s no need to forego infusing your home and life with wonderful scents. Simply diffuse natural fragrances and essential oils instead of burning dangerous aromatherapy candles.

Real Time MLM Leads Can Give You Explosive Business Growth No comments yet

How Real Time Leads Can Change Your Business If you have ever looked into buying MLM leads online you have probably heard of ‘Real Time Leads. You have probably also noticed that they are more expensive than many of the other types of leads out there. There is a reason for that. Real Time Leads have the ability to change your MLM business.

A Real Time Lead is a form of MLM leads that allows you to know when someone has shown interest in learning about a home based business opportunity - in real time. The moment that they provide their contact information and request that someone contact them with information about a home based business you are sent their MLM lead information. I know what you’re thinking… “So What? Why is this so important?”

A real time lead is up to 100 times more likely to enroll in your opportunity if you call them right when they request information. This is when their interest in a home based business is the highest that it will ever be, and they are already in ‘buying mode.’ By calling your Real Time Lead right away you may even get in touch with them while they are still on your website. They get the feeling that they are involved and important enough for you to call them right away rather than being put off until later. “So, how does this differ from other fresh leads?”

Simply put ‘the early bird gets the worm.’ No matter how early you get to your MLM lead you are always second to the person who got there before you. In the case of home based business leads you are on the clock. For every second that passed between the time when your Real Time Lead requested to be contacted and the time that you made the call you have lost a portion of their interest. They have moved off of your site and became distracted by another thought. The rest of their life reared its head and they had to run off to do an errand to cook a meal for their children.

All of these things place your opportunity on the ‘back burner’ in their mind. Letting your opportunity lose focus also means that it loses importance in the mind of your MLM lead. No matter how fresh your lead is it isn’t going to be able to provide the instant response that a Real Time Lead can provide. Your response time can make all the difference when dealing with your home based business leads, and that is where Real Time Leads have the advantage. “What if I go away for a weekend - will I lose the leads that I paid for during that time?” This depends on the MLM Leads Company that you are dealing with but many MLM Companies allow you to ‘pause’ your leads until you reactivate your service. When you are looking for a company that provides Real Time Leads you should always look for a company that only charges you for the leads that you actually get.

If your MLM leads campaign is paused you shouldn’t be billed because leads aren’t being sent to you. If you have never used the power of a Real Time Lead to accelerate your business I would recommend that you give it a try. When it comes to MLM leads there really isn’t anything more powerful than a home business lead provided in real time.
