Getting a Roman Battle Helmet for an Authentic Costume
Uncertain what kind of disguise to choose for a costume or for a masquerade party? Take a step back in time and you’ll enjoy wearing several types of Roman Helmets.
The Roman Helmets crests were elaborate plumes that were made of horsehair, and attached to the top of the helmets. There were some historical writings which were in belief of the assumption that Roman Officers whom commanded troops of more than 100 wore the crests of their helmets with the lines intersecting as to other legionnaires or possible foot soldiers wore their crests lengthwise.
Roman Helmets evolved over time from the Corinthian-style Helmets worn during the times of ancient Greece. Their helmets also incorporated elements of those worn by the Etruscans, who inhabited a region of Italy, and Gauls. By the way, it is commonly thought that the Gauls were also responsible for introducing chain mail to the Roman militia.
Unlike the greek helmets, the facial protection was not as good as the roman hemets that were worn in the 7th and 8th centuries, they protected the facial area fully making it otherwise very hard to see during battle. Roman Helmets were made with a substantial amount of safety for the top and sides of the head also for the back of the neck, they also were made this way for identifying purposes on the battle field.
To complete your costume, and dress historically, it is recommended that you pair one of the Roman Helmets with a red toga and leather sandals. If you are going to wear a Roman Helmet, leather skirt, and sandals, you will want to complete the look with a metal chest plate. This will give your outfit a real combat-ready appearance.
